🇻🇮🇺🇸This week, the United States Virgin Islands celebrates a powerful duality of freedom that is unique in the Caribbean and unique in the world. For us, July 3rd and July 4th are not just holidays; they are the twin pillars of our identity, defining where we came from and who we are today.

🗓️ JULY 3rd: OUR INDEPENDENCE DAY (Emancipation 1848) Before there was an American Independence Day for these islands, there was 1848. 176 years ago today, our ancestors, led by General Budhoe, rose up at Fort Frederik on St. Croix. They didn’t wait for freedom to be granted; they demanded it. This is USVI Emancipation Day. It is the foundation of our strength. We honor the resilience, the courage, and the determination of those who broke their own chains and laid the groundwork for everything we have achieved since. Today, we wear our madras and celebrate that unyielding spirit. Let the bells of freedom always ring! 🔔✨

🗓️ JULY 4th: THE PURSUIT OF LIBERTY (American Independence) As the smoke of Emancipation settled, our journey evolved. In 1917, the Danish West Indies became the U.S. Virgin Islands. We embrace the 4th of July not as a replacement for 1848, but as an affirmation of our shared democratic principles. We celebrate the ideals of liberty, democracy, and equality that define the United States—values that our ancestors fought for and that we strive to uphold today. We honor the USVI’s unique place within the American family, recognizing both our distinct culture and our shared future. 🎆🎇

We are a people with two distinct, essential anniversaries of liberty. We honor the sacrifice that created us and the partnership that sustains us.
